News: MISF!T® (My Interest Stays Firmly In Theatre) presents “Strangers” – A collection of short plays on August 23rd and August 24th, 2014

MISF!T presents Strangers

MISF!T® is starting a new series of plays featuring a professional platform for new playwrights. The first in the series is titled “Strangers”, an amalgamation of 3 original new plays – The storm, the falling rose and what! no…really?.

Who’s “the stranger”? What’s their story? Revenge, Redemption, Affection, Sex, Guilt, Moral Dilema, Trust? Can we always believe what we see? What if we aren’t taught the things the right way, at the right time? How do we look at women in our society? As mother, a sister, a wife or just an object of sex?

“Strangers” deals with some of the current social dilemas we, as a society are facing. Instead of consumping the plot, with intellectual jargon, the “strangers” is a humble attempt to make it thought provoking and definitely, entertaining.

Some of the photographs of this play is available on our Facebook Page. Photographs beautifully captured by Amit Ranjan Sahu.

Connectologues is a regular feature at MISF!T. We try to weave a collection of monologues(not necessarily related/connected) into a story. This form of presentation is abstract.

MISF!T presents Connectologues V 2.0

This is the second season of Connectologues – “Masks”. In the circus of life, we are all freaks put up on the world’s stage to showcase a carnival. But once the lights fade & we are away from the maddening crowds, the faces of light that are put on for the show come off to reveal the dark realms within. What really lies behind the wonderment of the arena of the stage and the shimmer of the lights? Is it all fun and games, or is there more behind the makeup & the faces full of colour?

Can I Play God on 10th,11th,17th & 18th August, 2013

“Can “I” Play God” is a dramatic presentation (designed with suspense) of a social issue. Taking someone’s life is punishable…then how do we justify war? Why are the laws different? The play is a humble attempt at making the audience think about what is right and what is wrong, a depiction of certain grey areas in our judiciary and essentially certain questions, we need to ask ourselves. Its a story of 2 men, who are fighting for what they believe in.Who will win?Law? These men? Or neither?

Directed by: Venkatesan Vaidhyanathan

Assisted by: Amit Ranjan Sahu

Play design: Ratan Thakore Grant

Cast: Venkatesan Vaidhyanathan & Amit Ranjan Sahu

Tickets available on Indianstage at Rs. 100/-

About the venue:
The word theatre originated form the French word “théâtre”, as well as the Greek word “theatron”, which means “place of seeing”. It is place that allows artists to perform in front of an audience. At MISF!T, we often question whether it is the play that defines a place or a place that defines the play. We strongly believe, it is the former.

The nature of this play, dictates a more intimate audience. Hence, we are neither presenting it in an auditorium or a hall or a restaurant. We plan to present the show in the same studio space in Koramangala, where our workshops happen. Incidentally, the very term “Studio” actually refers to a place where an art form is taught, studied and practiced (Source: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/studio). With this play, we are also bringing back the concept of “Audience on the Mat”. What this means is, there are no chairs. Audience will be seated on the mats that are provided.

Can I Play God on 5th and 6th Jan, 2013

Hence, we are neither opening it in an auditorium or a hall or a restaurant. We plan to open the show in the same studio space in Koramangala, where our workshops happen.

First Glimpse of a new original play

New MISF!T Play - First Glimpse

The students of MISF!T are performing a play on the 12th of August 2011. This is the first glimpse; keep looking out for further information. Here’s what the actors have to say about this:

“We are tired, we haven’t eaten,we haven’t slept well, we work 9 hrs on week days and 12 hrs on week-ends, go home so late………blah , blah ,blah.
Who cares !! we are having great fun….coz , we are the directors, script writers and actors of an innovative and equally exciting play from Misfit.

A play that is very unique in terms of the process, it is very tedious but it gives every actor the bandwidth to think out of the box, which makes the performance brilliant(May be!)…oh sorry it’s never a performance for us ,it has always been an experience :-) . “

So remember to block your calendars for the experience on the 12th of August 2011, 7:30pm at K H Kalasoudha, Ramanjaneya Temple Compound, Hanumantha Nagar, Basavanagudi, Bangalore – 560019.

News: MISF!T (My Interest Stays Firmly in Theatre) is starting its new Level 1 (Batch 23) acting course/workshop on April 16th.

MISF!T Level 1 Batch 23 Beginner's Acting Workshop Poster

Details of the course

Level 1 is the foundation course which aims to bring out the fun of acting, make participants to shed their inhibitions, teach them stagecraft, pantomime, and character building. It is also for people without any background in acting. The objective is to make them as natural as possible.

The course is unique because it focuses on bringing out the originality, the creativity, and the attention to detail in the actor, by letting the actor create their very own concepts and execute these, in the form of numerous short plays, during the course of the training.Feedback of the alumni of MISF!T are available here:http://misfit.co.in/?cat=15

The course includes:

  1. Breaking inhibitions: getting people comfortable to act, in front of an audience.
  2. Characterization.
  3. Voice: Understanding the components, and projection of voice.
  4. Observation.
  5. Listening skills.
  6. Pantomime.
  7. Improvisation.
  8. Scene creation and Character creation.
  9. Script creation.
  10. Fine tuning of theatre craft.

Duration of the course

First four weeks: Training (48 hours)

Frequency – Every Saturday and Sunday between 11:00am to 6:00pm with an hour’s lunch break. Based on progress of the course, we might reduce the duration of the Sunday class, and extend the duration of the course to 6 weeks.

After the training is over (48 hours), there will be additional hours (maybe 1-2 weeks) of intensive training, which will include fine tuning of all the aspects of the course, while preparing for the final grading.

This course is also designed in such a way, that it will help the participant, if he or she decides to, take acting as a profession.

Depending on the outcome of the grading, there might be a play (we have done away with the concept of presentation), which will be ticketed, showcasing what the students have learnt during the course. In case this does not happen, a lot of our recent students have been getting opportunities in various theatre productions, under the guidance of MISF!T.

The course gets constantly upgraded because the ideologies are constantly evolving.

Aspect of theatre like stage design, lights, and make-up might be added if there is time.

Please note punctuality and attendance are very essential.

MISF!T Theatrix play

Poison is a comedy about people, relationships and rumors. Poison is the story of Mr and Mrs Sharma, bellowing in their shallow unsatisfying existence until a drastic step leads them to roller-coaster ride of uninvited guests and unexplainable situations. Telling the intertwined tale of five people brought together one morning, Poison is an hour long rib tickler.

Using a blend of fast witted humor and an odd array of characters, Poison is an attempt to bring different styles of comedy on the same stage. Around a couple of months ago, MISF!T Democratic Actors Association was born to provide a platform for theater enthusiasts to meet, collaborate, and perform. And what germinated from it was an original play called “Strangeness of Reality”, which received rave reviews. To quote:

“I would have definitely paid to watch the show (Yes! you read it right… it was a non-ticketed show).”

“The play strangeness of reality was performed in a modest venue with minimal props. But the performance of the entire cast, the direction and the story was well worthy of a ticketed performance at a renowned theatre. From the very beginning the play caught my full attention and the intriguing turn of events definitely appealed to my curious half.”

” I think it makes for a very enjoyable watch and would recommend it to friends who prefer to spend an evening watching a theatrical performance. Well done guys. Cheers”

(The full reviews can be read here ).

A journey which started from doing a play for its sake, has now reached newer heights. The play is now going on as a ticketed show in KH Kala Saudha!

MISF!T Theatrix Original Play

“An actor. A perfect life. And then one day, his world comes tumbling over. Why? Whatever happens, is it true? Whatever he feels, is it real? Will he be able to prevent it? Whom should he trust? His wife? His friend? Brother? Or himself?”

These questions and their realities are an integral part of this concept. A intriguing tale of belief, hatred, love, helplessness, and the underlying shades, which takes you on a ride through that, one day, the day when everything changed.

“TheAtrix” – Democratic Actor’s Association of Misf!t presents, Strangeness of Reality, to be staged at KH Kala Soudha, Hanumantha Nagar(Beside RamAnjaneya Temple. Map link) on the 28th of November, 7PM.

The message for the day:

“I hate you! You are absolutely despicable, you’ve taken the fun away” – said the woman, as she walked up to me, while i was sitting in my regular coffee shop. I was quite stunned. She pulled the chair, next to mine and sat down (without being asked). She looked straight into my eyes, and said :
Woman: How could you have done this to me?
Me: Done what?…Sorry, but who are you?
Woman: Don’t you recognize me? I did one of the MISFIT courses, 5 years back.
Me: Hmm…(trying to recollect)
Woman: I have been wanting to do the level 2 course, but you’ve have moved so far away, that it will not be possible, even though i am so so very keen. The time spent in traveling — and getting back late, would definitely make my husband, leave me.
Me: Ahhh,,,(trying to find words,as age is catching up)
Woman: Mr. Thakore, you keep talking about “making acting and theatre accessible to people”. Please please please….start a course, somewhere in a central place.
Mr Thakore, lets get the fun back.

This little conversation with my student, made me realize, that i was going against my very objective. Thus, the good news for all aspiring level 2 students is that the new Level 2 course, will happen in one of the most central locations (NEAR CUNNINGHAM ROAD): “Ashvasan” – Smriti Nandan Cultural Centre, “Nanda-Deep”, 15/3, Palace Road, Bangalore – 560052.
