First and foremost: I salute Ratan for the person he is. I never thought that I would find a talented person who can achieve to be so professional while being extraordinarily compassionate, , philosophical but still practical, playful and humble ( I had read about them only in books). He is one of the most balanced individuals I have come across. I really like how willingly he gives out space for another person’s view as opposed to holding on his own views, if at all he would hold his views, he would have a solid reason behind it. I have learnt a lot from him as a person
About the course: I came to this course not so much for becoming a good actor but to imbibe what it meant to be an actor and use that knowledge to write scripts/stories. I have got a real taste of what it means to be an actor, thanks to great methods of teachings that were used by Ratan. I also managed to pull my first script ever (with help from Subhashish, without him it was impossible) and that alone makes me so happy about having taken this course. Let me list out some of things I really liked in this course:
- The exercises for freeing inhibitions
- They were a lot more than just being fun.
- The focus on not imitating celebrities but pick up characters from people in our daily life – the real gem of the teaching methods. Audience deserve original actors!
- The technical details of acting/staging/performance were conveyed in a simple and easy to understand manner.
- The level of details in the feedback Ratan gives out to individual actors after their performance.
I can go on but let me stop here with some suggestions that I believe can help:
- Lunch breaks – They took a lot of our time. It should perhaps not extend more than 45 minutes. It can be easily managed by having some understanding with nearby restaurants in terms of doing pre-orders.
- Homeworks – Ratan gives very good homework but then those homeworks are never checked. I think it would be a good idea to force students into coming up with a 1-2 minute performance every week, something that they are supposed to work on as a homework. Thiswould add another hour on top of what we already do in the class but I think it can be stolen from the time existing lunch breaks take (almost 2 hours).
I know that I have long way to go as an actor and still have lots of inhibitions to overcome and I am happy to start that journey
